The Provinces and Cities of Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a small country located on the borders of east and west as it is situated in the south eastern tip of Europe next to Turkey. As a small country that is only half the size of the United Kingdom, Bulgaria still manages to have a large number of provinces and important cities within it borders.
The country of Bulgaria is divided in to twenty eight provinces; these provinces are as follows…
Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Sofia, Sofia Obstina, Pernik, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, Lovech, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolian, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Kardjali, Rousse, Targovishte, Sliven, Yambol, Silistra, Razgrad, Shumen, Bourgas, Varna, Dobrich
Within each province there is a main city, these main cities always carry the same name as the province it is in. An example of this is the province of Haskovo where the main city is also called Haskovo.
While a lot of the provinces and main cities in Bulgaria you may not have heard of, there are quite a few that are very important on the international stage for different reasons from tourism to manufacturing and finance.
Sofia is probably the most well known city in Bulgaria as it is the capital city and has the largest population. Sofia is a major financial force in the country and a place where the income is also the highest, the city also has the biggest and most commercial airport.
The province of Plovdiv and its city bearing the same name is very important in Europe as it is the oldest city, even older than Constantinople. Plovdiv is a historical centre of European civilisation as the Thracian people flourished in the area over eight thousand years ago due to the mountain range and large river that the city is located by.
Varna is another province that has become very important in recent years. The province of Varna and the city bearing the same name have become a huge tourism centre for the country due to it being located on the Black Sea coast and because of the wonderful hot climate that Bulgaria enjoys. The huge tourist hotspot of Golden Sands is located in the province of Varna.
There are many important reasons why we need to take a better look at Bulgaria’s cities and provinces as they make an important contribution to Europe in many ways.
